Save on your next vacation

One of the first things most of us cut out of our budgets when those budgets get tight is vacations.  However, all of us really need a vacation now and then to refresh, rejuvenate, and relax.  Otherwise, work becomes tedious, relationships become strained, and we just start to wear out.  There is good news for those on a tight budget though.  You don’t have to spend a lot o take a vacation or weekend getaway.  There are some very viable ways to save money.

Here we offer you 10 steps to saving money on your next vacation to get you started.

Save Money On Your Next Vacation

  1. Consider a road trip vacation instead of flying.  We all think of destinations far from home when we think “vacation.”  Go online and find a vacation spot close enough to drive to. This will save air fare and you’ll have the extra luxury of carrying all the stuff you wish you had when you fly somewhere.
  2. Start saving for your next vacation now.  Whether your vacation time is a week from now or nine months from now, every little bit you can save towards that vacation will make it seem like more of a reality you can afford.  Even if you can only put aside a couple of dollars a week, you’ll find that it helps with those expenses.  So give up that lunch or coffee splurge.  Dream about that vacation while you eat your sack lunch.
  3. Plan your vacation during off-peak times.  Everyone travels during the warm weather months, mid-June through September.  Of course that’s when prices for all those vacations items go up as well.  Travel early in the year, April through June, and not only will you get to enjoy the warm weather, but you’ll also find some great deals on flights and hotels as well.
  4. Plan a vacation that isn’t tourism-driven. Vacation destinations that depend on tourism for their main source of income will always be more expensive than those that have other things to offer.  Just because a place is beautiful, doesn’t mean that tourism rules there.  A few exotic places you can go that aren’t necessarily tourism-driven include, Eastern Europe, parts of Brazil, Costa Rica, and several US beach areas that are sparsely populated.  Do a little research and you’ll find that you can afford to get away from it all this year even if your budget is tight.
  5. Consider staying in a vacation rental instead of a hotel room.  Unless you are travelling alone, a vacation rental will almost always be more economical than a hotel room.  You can find houses, condos, cottages and the like on several online sites for a week for about half the price of a hotel room.  And, you’ll have a kitchen, some privacy, and space to relax and enjoy yourself as well.
  6. Plan to eat in.  Vacations can be eat in affairs instead of eat out ones. Rent a vacation rental, prepare some simple meals and you and save big on your vacation.  Then, reward yourself with one or two meals out that you splurge on.  After all you’ve now saved money on your mode of transportation (if you drove), save money on your rental (if you are in a vacation rental), and saved enough on food by cooking for yourselves to justify those couple of nights out.
  7. Take advantage of coupon deals that online vendors like Brads Deals, Sweet Jack, and Groupon offer.  You may not find a destination discount you want to take advantage of, but one of these vendors may have just the offer you’re looking for.  Don’t discount them just because they are coupon vendors.  There are some very worthwhile saving to be had on hotel rooms and restaurants that might just fit into your vacation plans and save you some money to boot.
  8. Check out all-inclusive offers.  If you are planning a long vacation, an all-inclusive resort will definitely save you some money.  Most of these types of deals cover the cost of your room, some amenities, meals, excursions, and drinks.  And, if you combine an all-inclusive deal with off-peak travel, you’ll save a ton of money in addition to going somewhere you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.
  9. Make use of public transportation between cities, airports and entertainment.  If your vacation plans involve staying in a city and sightseeing, don’t rent a car.  You are just adding expenses in the form of gas and parking.  Instead use the public transportation system. Most major cities have public transportation that is highly affordable and will go anywhere in the city you need or want to go.
  10. Pack your own snacks.  Especially if you travel with children, you’ll find that packing your on snacks from home to take along will save a lot of money.  Stopping along your travel route to buy snacks, drinks and the like will add up.  Sometimes one stop for chips and drinks could equal a dining out experience for you and your family. Make a grocery run before heading on your vacation for some snacks for the trip, and then when you get to your destination, stock up again so your aren’t constantly in search of food and drink to tide you and your family over until mealtime.

Plan Ahead and Save Money On Your Next Vacation

Vacations are never free. However, with just a little bit of planning, some research and a attitude of trying to do things a different more inexpensive way, you can take steps to lower your vacation spending and still have a great time.
